From Chaos to Clarity: How Sayvant Transforms My ER Shifts
One doctor's perspective on using Sayvant in the EM -
By Andrew Napier, MD FAAEM
I step into the ER, coffee in hand, already bracing for the chaos. The patient list is stacked higher than my caffeine tolerance, and it’s just the start of my shift. Today will be different is something we tell ourselves every single shift, though it never is. But this time, I’ve got an ace up my sleeve. It’s Sayvant, a clinical documentation AI solution that’s become as vital to me as my stethoscope, and trust me, that’s saying something.
Sayvant isn’t technology in search of a problem - it was born from necessity, something every emergency physician knows too well. We were drowning in paperwork, buried under endless charting, and told to see more patients faster without cutting corners. And this was BEFORE the pandemic. Tired of the documentation grind and flashy solutions that fell short, a group of us docs decided it was time for a change. We created Sayvant to simplify documentation, not replace the clinical judgment that makes us doctors, because if anyone should steer the ship, it’s those who actually know how to navigate the waters.
Here’s how it works. I walk into a patient’s room with my phone in my pocket, and Sayvant quietly listens in the background. I introduce myself, start the exam, and call out my findings in that familiar doctor-speak: “Lungs are clear, heart sounds normal, abdomen non-tender.” Then I break it down in plain English for the family. They appreciate that I’m not just mumbling medical jargon but actually making sure they understand what’s happening.
Here’s where Sayvant really shines. Instead of being glued to a computer with my back to the patient, typing furiously, I’m instead facing and focused on the patient. I’m thorough, present, and they notice. When I step out of the room, Sayvant’s already drafted my note, so I can move on to the next patient without missing a beat.
Not every case is simple. Some are straightforward, like a sprained ankle or an abrasion. For those, Sayvant’s one-touch note feature wraps things up quickly. For more complex cases, after finishing the history and physical, I head back to my desk. By then, Sayvant’s transcribed my notes, and I’m ready to dive into the workup. This is where I step in because Sayvant doesn’t make clinical decisions or replace my judgment. It’s there to defend my diagnosis and keep everything organized, making sure paperwork doesn’t get in the way of patient care.
By the end of my shift, I’ve seen my patients, made my decisions, and kept up with my documentation. No more staying late, skipping meals while hunched over a computer, trying to remember details from hours ago. Sayvant’s got that covered, so I can focus on what really matters: my patients.
Sayvant is built by clinicians, for clinicians, to make our lives easier and our care better.
Now, if only it could refill my coffee.
